Artist, Reader, Writer
A Da Vinci Art Alliance Members Exhibition
Oct. 3 - Oct. 14
Deadline to Submit: Sept. 22, 2018 at 11:59pm
Open Call to DVAA Members:
Perhaps it romantic to imagine the lone, solitary artist. The fruits of their labors burst forth into creation like a Greek god born out of some comically ridiculous concept of divine biology. More often than not though, this not the case. Now more than ever artists are connected and informed. One could argue that this ease of communication and access to information encourages the proliferation of artistic discourse. Here at Da Vinci Art Alliance we are very interested in nurturing artistic discourse. To do this, conversations must be had! Our exhibitions always seek to create conversations between artists as well as conversations between artworks. This exhibition in particular will emphasize the relationship between artworks in the form of pairs, one visual and one written.
Artist, Reader, Writer will be a show focused on the pairing of visual art and works of literature. Each artist will submit one visual artwork of their own creation and one short text to be paired with and displayed alongside it. The primary criteria of this accompanying text is that it cannot be written by you or in any way be a description of your artwork. Instead, your challenge is to create an artistic pairing between a short work of literature (must fit within a standard 8.5x11” page) and your own artwork. The resulting combination could inspire comparison, juxtaposition, or inform one another in some way. Your text could come from anything: lyrics, a favorite poem, an excerpt from a book, a transcribed scene from a play, a guided meditation, or even an advertisement.
Along with the exhibition, DVAA will display a book of collected artwork information and artists statements. Each exhibiting artist will have a single 8.5x11” page with: artist name, artwork title, medium, date, price, and artist statement. Some information that could be included in your artist statement could be: insights into your artistic practice, impetus in creating your current body of work, or possible sources of inspiration. For this exhibition I encourage each of you to discuss the paired text, why you selected it, and the nature of this pairing. There will be a space to provide this statement during the online application process. These statements are meant to enhance audience engagement with each exhibition - if you would like help with your statement, feel free to reach out to email@example.com.
