CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE: CELEBRATING QUEER RESILIENCE, juried open call by DVAA hosted at IHP

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: MARCH 10TH, 11:59pm

Open Call to all DVAA Members and the Public

In partnership with LightBox Film Center at International House Philadelphia

Deadline to Submit: March 10, midnight
Juried by Warren Muller

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, this summer Lightbox Film Center will feature a series of films featuring this pivotal moment in the struggle for LGBTQ civil rights. Just as American history has been broadly shaped by the politics of dissent, affecting everything from our labor laws to foreign policy, protest has continued to shape LGBTQ acceptance and liberation. Along with resistance and protest, the LGBTQ rights movement is also characterized by pride: enduring celebration of identity and love that empowers marginalized and antagonized communities to create change.
In partnership with Lightbox Film Center, Da Vinci Art Alliance will curate the related exhibition, Civil Disobedience: Celebrating Queer Resilience. This group exhibition and call for artwork celebrates the history of queer resilience and protest, art that celebrates a community that is unafraid to speak its mind.
“[History] is made and preserved by and for particular classes of people, [but] a camera in some hands can preserve an alternate history.” - David Wojnarowicz.

ABOUT THE JUROR: Warren Muller is sculptor and co-founder of design studio and gallery, Bahdeebahdu. Best know for creating light sculptures from reclaimed objects, Muller imbues his assemblages with a uniquely playful spirit. His work draws on myths, fairy tales, and personal idiosyncrasies into his lit sculptures.

Encounters with Whitman.jpg

ENCOUNTERS WITH WHITMAN: "These I Singing in Spring Collect for Lovers,"
Open Call for Video Art

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: MAY 17TH, 11:59PM

Open Call to all LGBTQ DVAA Members and the Public

Deadline to Submit: May 17th, Midnight.

Casa de Duende, in collaboration with Da Vinci Art Alliance, presents Encounters with Whitman: a Photography and Video Exhibition in Celebration of the Whitman Bicentennial June 7th through the 17th, 2019. Call for photography issued separately.

Casa de Duende issues an international call for entries for a juried video exhibition to coincide with the bicentennial celebration of the birth of the American Poet Walt Whitman, (1819-1892). “These I Singing in Spring Collect for Lovers, Erotic Celebrations of Self, lovers, and Comrades seeks submissions of video work that examines, reinterprets and celebrates Walt Whitman’s Calamus poems. Forming part of Whitman’s larger collection of Leaves of Grass (1855), the Calamus poems remain one of the earliest and most explicit poetical sequences celebrating homoerotic love and affection between men.

The Calamus sequence of poems contributed to a wide range of responses in the way homoerotic love would be viewed and expressed by subsequent generations of gay men in the USA and abroad, impacting art, literature, photography, music and film. The Calamus poems also helped to shape individual and collective gay male ideas of democracy, masculinity, sex, freedom, and community. It is the exploration of these aspects of Whitman’s work we seek to highlight through this exhibition. We seek a wide diversity of LGBTQ voices irrespective of age, race and or gender.
